Why You Should Regularly Clean Your Refrigerator Gasket

As you know if you have a refrigerator (and if you’re reading this you definitely have a fridge), a fridge is expensive! It is a very expensive investment, so you want to make good on that investment. Proper maintenance and keeping your fridge clean will help your fridge last longer and do its job better! In case you don’t know, gaskets are the rubber seal on your fridge that keeps your food cold. Cold air is pushed into the fridge, but it only stays there because of the gasket. It keeps warm air out and cool air in! You should really appreciate your gasket every time you open your fridge and find cold, fresh food inside.

However, gaskets are bound to wear down after constantly opening and closing the fridge. It can get damaged and it can compromise the quality of your food and how well your fridge works. And I don’t think anyone wants their food to go bad! Or worse, your very expensive fridge dies! Gaskets will eventually have to be replaced, but it doesn’t have to be so often. By cleaning your gasket, you can extend its life and therefore help your fridge and food last longer along with the gasket.

Cleaning your gasket is actually pretty easy! Here’s how to do it:

  1. Inspect the Gaskets

You should check the gaskets to find any signs of wear. Also check for any damages, such as tears or scratches. It is also possible for dirt or mold to build up on the gasket, so make sure there is none of that.

  1. Prepare the Cleaning Solution

Gaskets are sometimes sensitive, so you don’t want to use any harsh chemicals because it might break down the rubber. All you have to do is mix warm water with mild detergent! Easy as that!

  1. Clean the Gasket

To clean the gasket, get a clean cloth or a sponge and dip it into the cleaning solution that you just made and gently clean the gasket. Gently scrub the rubber, and make sure to focus on areas with visible dirt or dust building up.

  1. Rinse and Dry

After you’ve cleaned the gasket with the solution, get a damp cloth or damp paper towel to remove any soap left on the rubber. Then, you can dry it with a clean and dry towel.

  1. Check for a Proper Seal

After you’ve dried off the gasket, check for a proper seal. Do this by closing the fridge door and checking if it is well sealed! If the fridge won’t seal, you may have an alignment issue or need to replace your gasket.

  1. Repeat

This process was easy, right? Well, you should repeat this process every once in a while to make sure that your gasket will last as long as possible. I would recommend once or twice every two months!

Gaskets are overlooked most of the time, but they are a very important part of your fridge! They keep your food fresh, and your fridge cold and working properly. By cleaning your gasket regularly, you can make sure that you don’t spend any more money than you have to on your fridge or refrigerated food! So the next time you stock your fridge full of delicious foods, show some love to those beautiful rubber seals in your fridge!
