How to Clean Your Refrigerator Gaskets

A refrigerator is a necessary appliance in every home. How else can we keep our food fresh and lasting for so long? Your fridge is very important, and when it breaks, most people feel a sense of panic. It’s expensive! Trust me I know, and no one wants to buy a new fridge unless we absolutely have to, am I right? Well, there is a component of your fridge that is the reason why your food stays cold: the gasket. And it is important to keep this component clean

The gasket is the rubber lining on your fridge that seals the fridge closed and keeps the cold air inside. In order for your gasket to do its job, it must be able to seal properly. And in order to seal properly, it must be clean! So, when you’re fridge isn’t staying cold, don’t go straight to buying a new fridge (unless you’re looking for an excuse to get a nicer newer fridge). You should check out your gasket first, and see if something is wrong.

You should check for any damages to your gasket or any signs of wear. But to prevent damage and extend the life of the gasket, it is important to keep it clean. Here is how you clean a refrigerator gasket:

  1. Get your supplies

You will need mild detergent or soap, warm water, a soft cloth or sponge, a toothbrush or soft-bristled brush, and a towel. You want to use mild soap and soft, sensitive cloth or towel to avoid hurting the rubber gasket.

  1. Prepare the cleaning solution

To prepare the cleaning solution, use a small amount of mild detergent or soap with warm water in a bowl or bucket. I want to emphasize the word mild because harsh chemicals can damage the rubber. Using harsh chemicals or harsh cloth to clean the rubber can result in the rubber breaking down or wearing thin.

  1. Remove Dirt and Debris

Wipe the gasket with a soft cloth or sponge dampened with the cleaning solution. Pay attention to the folds and hard-to-reach crevices because this is where the dirt usually tends to be. Use gentle pressure to avoid damaging the rubber

  1. Deep Cleaning

You may not always have to do this step, but it is recommended. If you have dirt or mold that just won’t wipe away, use a toothbrush to gently scrub the area. Be careful not to create any tears or stretching in the gasket.

  1. Rinse and Dry

After cleaning, rinse the gasket with clean water to remove any soap left on the gasket. Use a dry towel to wipe away any excess moisture and allow the gasket to air dry completely before closing the fridge door.

  1. Repeat every so often! As much as needed.

Cleaning your fridge gasket is a simple process. It may be a bit annoying, but it is necessary and will benefit you later when your fridge lasts longer! Follow these easy steps to get a clean, longer-lasting gasket. A cleaner, longer-lasting fridge will follow!
