Why Your Energy Bills Are Higher

We all dread the time when our energy bills arrive. We slowly open that letter and pray to whoever is watching over us that it isn’t unreasonably high. Some of us let out a sigh of relief, and some of us stared at the number in shock with tears welling up in our eyes. If you’re reading this, you’re probably the latter. If your energy bill is incredibly high, much higher than your last one, here are some of the reasons why:

First, seasonal variations. One reason why your energy bill might be higher is because of the changing seasons. When the weather gets super hot, the air conditioning works harder to keep your house cool. When the weather gets super cold, the heater works a little extra to make sure you stay warm. This might be why your energy bills are higher during the coldest of winter and the hottest of summer. Of course, during spring or any time when the weather is relatively mild, this wouldn’t be an issue.

Another reason might be an increase in appliance usage. Every time you charge your phone, your energy bill goes up. Every time you turn on your electric mixer, oven, or microwave, your energy bill will go up. As technology advances, it is getting harder to live without these appliances. So, this is the consequence you face for having the convenience of technological appliances. You can get your energy bill to go down by only using these appliances when it is necessary. If you decrease the consumption of these items, your energy bill won’t be as high.

Next, a not-so-obvious reason is your fridge. Your fridge is one of the appliances that is always running. There isn’t really a way to lessen the energy that your fridge needs. However, if the fridge doesn’t seal properly, it uses more energy than before to keep things cold. The gasket is the rubber seal that seals your fridge and keeps your food fresh. If that gasket has a gap or a tear, it won’t seal your fridge properly. This causes the fridge to use more energy to keep your food cold, and most likely won’t do as good a job. I would check out your gasket for any inconveniences to see if that’s the issue.

Another reason is poor insulation and drafts. Leaky windows, poorly insulated attics, and gaps around doors allow cool or warm air to escape into the house and will cause the heating or cooling system to work harder.

The last reason I’ll mention in this article is a change in lifestyle. Changes in your daily routine can impact energy consumption. Maybe you’re working at home more or going to the office less. You might be adjusting your thermostat more often or opening your fridge more often. If you’re hosting guests or having parties, this can definitely lead to higher energy bills.

I hope this article highlights the reason why your energy bills have been so high recently. It may be one, or a combination of a few of them. I hope you the best and happiness when you open future energy bills! In case your gasket is the reason for your high bills:
