Our refrigerators often are overstuffed. It’s really hard to avoid overstuffing. Trust me, I get it. You get to the grocery store and see all these glorious foods. Fruits, vegetables, frozen pizzas, and chocolate cakes. If you’re like me, you buy things that you think you’ll use, then never actually use them. I often forget about certain items in my fridge and end up wasting my money. It turns out, I don’t just lose money on those foods I bought and never used, I lose money because those foods lead to overstuffing my fridge. And as a result, my energy bill got higher. When you overstuff your fridge, your fridge becomes less efficient and heres why:
First, poor air circulation. When a fridge is jam-packed, air circulation becomes restricted. Proper air circulation is so important when it comes to maintaining the right temperature in your fridge. Cold air needs to circulate all throughout the fridge, or else there will be warm spots in your fridge where bacteria is free to grow easily. Poor air circulation leads to uneven cooling and potential food waste.
Next, the risk of contamination. When your fridge is tightly packed with a variety of foods, there is a higher risk of cross contamination. Raw meats and seafood can drip onto other foods, and besides being gross at the thought, it can be very harmful to your health as well. Other bacteria can grow on these contaminated foods and spread to the rest of your fridge as well.
Arguably, the most important thing is energy efficiency. Overstuffing your fridge can impact its energy efficiency. When your fridge is overstuffed and the air circulation is hindered, the fridge must work harder to keep its inside cold. This means that it needs more energy to run, therefore increasing your energy bills. And as im sure, no one wants higher energy bills.
There’s an easy fix to overstuffing your fridge. Just make sure that you organize your foods well and only buy what you can fit inside neatly. I know it’s tempting to buy ingredients and delicious foods when you’re at the store, but think about your fridge. Think about your energy bills. Is it really worth it? Throwing away money on these foods? Then, throwing away money on the increase in your energy bills. I don’t know about you, but to me, it really isn’t worth it. So next time you got to the grocery store, make sure that you think about this article and how much money you can save if you don’t buy that extra little something.
